100 Thieves release Cody Sun ahead of 2021 season – Daily Esports
The 100 Thieves organization has officially released League of Legends AD Carry Cody “Cody Sun” Sun. ESPN journalist Jacob Wolf broke the about the contract ending for the AD Carry. Soon after, 100 Thieves released an official statement, letting Cody Sun explore his options for the 2021 season.
Cody Sun was part of the original 2018 100 Thieves lineup that made it to the Spring Finals and Worlds. After that impressive run, Cody was released to Clutch Gaming, who he also went to Worlds with a year later. For the 2020 season, 100 Thieves brought in Chris “PapaSmithy” Smith as their general manager who brought back Cody Sun. This move was meant to repeat the success that the team had two years prior.
While 100 Thieves did have more success in 2020, they could not cement themselves during the playoffs. However, fans were not expecting the team to get rid of Cody, who had a solid performance through the split. Regardless of his solid performance, it seems that Cody Sun may head to the Academy.
100 Thieves look for young talent
PapaSmithy has made it clear that 100 Thieves is looking to develop young talent instead of buying it. That was solidified when the team brought in Tommy “Ryoma” Le and Philippe “Poome” Lavoie. While these two had glimpses of success, both were not ready for the talent on the LCS stage.
100 Thieves is now looking to purchase a young AD Carry that the team can develop into a great player. Multiple rumors have circulated about buying Johnsun “Johnsun” Nguyen or Ian “FBI” Huang. Both players currently reside on the starting rosters for Dignitas and Golden Guardians respectively. They are both also North American players and would not take up an import slot on the team.
TSM Academy ADC Lawrence “Lost” Sze Yuy Hui has also been rumored to be going to 100 Thieves. However, a player with experience on the main stage would be better suited for development. Roster mania kicks off November 16 at 7 PM ET.
