China to Lift Event Capacity Restrictions for Entertainment Use in Low-Risk Areas
China’s National Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced Monday that the country will lift the event capacity restrictions on entertainment venues, including cinemas, theaters, and internet cafes from “low-risk” areas of the current COVID-19 pandemic.
“This should be a positive signal for the home-away strategy of League of Legends Pro League (LPL),” China’s League of Legends operator TJ Sports told The Esports Observer, “Though we have not fully opened the ticket selling process for our Shanghai LPL home venue.”
“For the large-scale event, the related bodies should communicate and coordinate with the public security departments, and appropriately control the number of attendance base on the local COVID-19 measures,” the official announcement stated.
Over the long term, the announcement was beneficial for China’s esports industry because the thousands of internet cafes in the country play an important role in developing esports grassroots.
Last week, Tencent and VSPN also announced that the Peacekeeper Elite annual event, Peacekeeper Elite Championship (PEC), will be hosted at the Shanghai Mercedes-Benz Arena this summer.
