Treyarch dev goes in-depth with how FMJ will work in Black Ops Cold War

Ever since the official multiplayer reveal, Treyarch has been extremely open with how Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War multiplayer will work. The developers have gone quite in-depth with curious fans on social media. This has been fantastic for the community, as we’re getting a behind the scenes look at the game’s development. Of course, there are still some surprises in store for both the open beta and worldwide release. However, what won’t be a surprise is how FMJ and bullet penetration will work in the new Call of Duty.

FMJ and bullet penetration in Black Ops Cold War

In the past, this has been a game-breaking feature within several Call of Duty titles. Bullet penetration is essentially a statistic that measures how much damage a weapon does to an enemy through walls and structures. There are some structures that have never been able to be shot through, such as concrete walls or trees. However, for the most part, everything on a Call of Duty map is able to be shot through.

This means that bullet penetration plays a major role in the game. If the penetration in multiplayer is high, ducking behind cover has very little meaning. However, if it’s low, then it becomes extremely difficult to kill enemies near walls, cover, etc.

Well, in Black Ops Cold War, guns won’t be too affected by bullet penetration. This includes the FMJ attachment, which will not be a part of multiplayer. Instead, guns will have a base bullet penetration value that’s the same across the various classes. Treyarch developer Tony Flame explains more in a recent tweet.

So basically, bullet penetration depends on the class of weapon you’re using. Assault rifles will deal more penetration damage than a submachine gun but less than a light machine gun. This is a welcome change to multiplayer, as the FMJ attachment could be a little overpowered but also inconsistent at the same time.

Hopefully, we’ll be able to see this change in action when the open beta releases on October 8. Make sure to keep up with Daily Esports for all Black Ops Cold War news.
