The Pokémon Company and Tencent team up to make games for China
Chinese tech and entertainment giant Tencent and The Pokémon Company have announced that the two will be working together to develop games. The release didn’t include any specific game announcements, though as Tencent is the mobile and PC games giant of China, we can likely expect something for one of those platforms.
Tencent recently struck a deal with Nintendo, which is part owner of The Pokémon Company, to bring the Nintendo Switch to China, part of the game maker’s efforts to expand into the territory.
Tencent is known for its mobile MOBA, Honor of Kings, which was massively popular in China. The international version of this game, Arena of Valor, didn’t take off quite as well as its source material game did, massively due to the fact that mobile gaming isn’t nearly as popular in other countries.
The company also fully bought Riot Games in 2015, meaning that the company owns League of Legends. Tencent also has holdings in games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
The Pokémon Company is working on releasing Pokémon Masters, a mobile game in partnership with DeNA, and continues to update Pokémon Go, in partnership with Niantic.
