Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Can You Change Your Name?

In the real world, your name isn’t something you have to live with for your entire life if you don’t want to, but what about in Animal Crossing: New Horizons? Are you also able to change your name on your own island, or is it something you’re stuck with for life? We have the answers for you here.

You may have been too full of excitement to remember your first day with Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but among the first questions the game asks of you before setting you loose on your brand new island is your name and birthday. While your birthday shouldn’t take any thought, picking a name is a major decision. Not only is it important because it will be how you are referred to by all your fellow islanders, but because it might be more permanent than you expect.

Can You Change Your Name In Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Right when you start the game you will have a brief intro sequence where you choose various things and input your name. Once you select your name, you will get a warning that tells you that the decision is permanent and that there’s no way to change your name once you confirm. Once you pick your name, there’s no going back.

The one slight exception is the nickname system in the game. Over time, you might speak to a villager who asks if they can call you by a nickname rather than your actual name. If you accept, then that villager will start referring to you by that nickname, and others will eventually ask to use it as well, essentially replacing your real name. But, this initial nickname is out of your control. You will have to continue playing and interacting with villagers until they give you the opportunity to pick out a new nickname for yourself.

Unfortunately, that is the only possible way to get around your name, so hopefully, you picked out one you like at the start because you’re going to be stuck with it forever (just like your birthday). You do have the nickname option to fall back on if you really need a change, but it can be quite time consuming to get all your villagers to adopt it.
