Atlus Will Launch A Flagship Game In 2022
As we hit the end of the year, Famitsu has once again interviewed over a hundred Japanese game developers to ask their thoughts on the future. One of them was Shinjiro Takada, product manager at Atlus' First Creative Department, where he was asked what he's looking forward to in 2022.
"I chose “challenge” as the keyword for 2022, with the hope to release a game that will become a pillar for Atlus," said Takada (with translation from Persona Central). "All of us at Atlus are working hard to develop this game so that it will be interesting and satisfying for everyone, so please look forward to it."
Takada didn't provide much else in terms of details, but there's one game that might fit the "pillar" description. Project Re Fantasy goes beyond the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series as a brand new IP from Atlus. First announced back in 2016 and set in a new high-fantasy world, the game has been in extended development since then with just a single trailer.
Persona Central reported last year that development on Re Fantasy would reach its "climax" in 2021, so a 2022 release would be right on schedule. And while Atlus has plenty of new games in development, none seem to rise to the description of a new “pillar” IP.
But the pandemic has been tiring for everyone, and Takada noted that he'll be "taking a breather" between now and a new game announcement.
Or Takada could just be referring to Persona 6, which is confirmed to be in development thanks to a recruitment drive over the summer. There's also the Persona 4 Arena Ultimax port that was announced at The Game Awards, and rumors of a Persona 3 Portable remaster coming in the indeterminate future. Plenty of "pillars" to choose from so long as you redefine the word a bit.
