Blizzard DDoS attack: WoW Classic servers were down for hours, Blizzard twitter confirms
World Of Warcraft Classic players were unable to get online late last night in what appears to have been a coordinated DDoS attack on Blizzard servers.
According to Kotaku, the issues appeared to begin at around 4 or 5pm in the afternoon (UK time).
Soon afterwards, Blizzard confirmed that the game was facing DDoS attacks in a tweet sent out on the BlizzardCS support account, writing:
"Some online services continue to be impacted by a series of DDoS attacks which are resulting in high latency and disconnections. These disruption effects have been felt by a portion of our players, impacting their gaming experience. Thank you again for your continued patience."
Kotaku also reported that the attacks may have come from a Twitter account named UkDrillas, who officially took credit for the DDoS attack, roughly 30 minutes prior to the first attacks.
UkDrilass originally tweeted: "In roughly 20-30mins. Will attack every US PVP WoW server. Just setting up domain =)"
The original tweet is no longer available and The twitter account has now been suspended. Blizzard has not commented if this specific user was responsible for the outage.
A little over five hours ago Blizzard's various customer service accounts told followers: "The DDOS attacks against network providers that we were monitoring have ended."
However, there are still some reports of players encountering issues. Over on the Blizzard Support website, there's still a 'Breaking news' notice warning of Game Login Issues.
A note from Blizzard reads: " Some online services continue to be impacted by a series of widespread DDoS attacks towards certain service providers which are resulting in high latency and disconnections. These disruption effects have been felt by a portion of our players, impacting their gaming experience. We continue to closely monitor the situation and would like to thank you again for your continued patience ."
Anyone who is still having issues or unable to log in are being directed to a Blizzard support site to help resolve Connection Troubleshooting . If you're still having issues, follow the link above.
Stay tuned for updates.
