Bubble Bobble 4 Friends announced as Nintendo Switch exclusive

After years in the wilderness there’s finally going to be a new Bubble Bobble game, with a four-player sequel coming to Switch.

The fact that Rainbow Islands is one of the best games ever made is a fact now sadly forgotten by most gamers, with the game no longer being easily available on any modern format.

The same is true of its predecessor Bubble Bobble, which was one of the great co-op arcade games of the 80s but which has also now been largely forgotten. But no longer.

Bubble Bobble 4 Friends is a four-player co-op game for Switch and will be out in Europe on 19 November, which unusually is earlier than the spring 2020 release date for America.

As much as we welcome the return though we can’t say the trailer is all that encouraging, with a very bland art style that seems to lose all the charm of the original.

The four-player aspect sounds fun though, so hopefully it plays better than it looks.

Original creator Taito are now owned by Square Enix but they’ve been largely dormant in recent years and Bubble Bobble 4 is actually being published by Germany company ININ Games.

Bubble Bobble 4 is one of the first new releases since Taito decided to start making games for current generation formats, with Ninja Warriors Saviours due out at the end of the month and Darius Cozmic Collection which is currently only planned for Japan.

So maybe there is a chance of a new Rainbow Islands after all…
