Cheaper Switch out by June claims new source

Another report has suggested that a cheaper version of the Nintendo Switch will be out this year, but perhaps sooner than expected.

Predicting Nintendo is always a mug’s game but for months now there have been rumours that they’re planning a new, cheaper version of the Switch.

There’s not been so much as a hint from Nintendo themselves but now Bloomberg claims it has two sources, one of who claims it will, ‘likely be launched by the end of June’.

Previous reports from Japan had suggested that the new model would be out this autumn, although it’s possible it may be launched at a different time in the West.

The Bloomberg report, which is more concerned about Nintendo’s share price and upcoming full year financial results, makes no mention of whether the new model would be portable-only or not – although the recent Japanese report suggested that it will still connect to a dock.

The other common rumour surrounding the Switch is that there will be a more powerful version of the console released after the portable one, although how much more powerful has never been clear.

Bloomberg reference this rumour with the following comment: ‘The existing Switch will receive a modest upgrade this year, though a more powerful version is not in the works.’

That presumably means that there will be a minor upgrade, in the manner of the New 3DS, but no current plans for a next gen replacement.

June is E3 month, so Nintendo may be leaving an official annoucement until then. Although, of course, that counts as predicting what Nintendo might do, which is never a good idea…
