Control owners get 'impossible' free upgrade, then have it taken away
505 Games accidentally gave certain Control players access to the Ultimate Edition for free, and then subsequently took it away.
Despite claims to the contrary, Control’s Ultimate Edition was recently made available as a free download for Digital Deluxe owners.
Those who own the Deluxe Edition on PlayStation 4 noticed that the Ultimate Edition had not only been added to the PlayStation Store, they had the option to download it for free.
This is completely contradictory to publisher 505 Game’s statement that such an upgrade was not feasible.
For those who don’t know, 505 Games announced the Ultimate Edition last month for current and next gen platforms, which includes the base game and season pass content.
It quickly drew criticism when 505 explained that those who already owned the game and season pass, either individually or via the Digital Deluxe Edition, would not be entitled to a free upgrade to the Ultimate Edition. This is despite the Ultimate Edition featuring the exact same content and no extras.
Not only that, but the free next gen upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions will only be possible via the Ultimate Edition, meaning anyone who bought Control has to buy it again if they want to play it on next gen platforms, unlike most other cross-gen titles.
505 defended its decision, saying ‘The upgrade path that we are offering is only possible when upgrading from the same version of the game. As we are only doing additional development on Control Ultimate Edition on the next gen platforms, we are unfortunately unable to offer an upgrade path to all existing Control players.’
