Crash Bandicoot might be returning, but probably not in the way you imagined

We've just seen the final character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launch as part of the Fighters Pass 1 – another Fire Emblem rep, Byleth.

The announcement of yet another Fire Emblem character has left a big chunk of the Smash community a little distraught – even before this new DLC addition, many players thought that Fire Emblem as a series was over-represented.

So adding another protagonist to the game hasn't really ingratiated the community to Sakurai and his development crew.

But new rumours suggest the developers of the game could be on track to score some huge hits with the next set of DLC.

After Byleth's announcement, it was revealed that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is getting a second DLC Fighters Pass that will introduce six new characters to the game through 2020 and into 2021.

And we may already know who the first character in this newly promised set of content will be.

According to MandyCan – a respected data miner that has previously managed to correctly predict that Byleth would be joining the Smash roster, months ahead of the character's official release – Crash Bandicoot will join Smash Bros Ultimate in 2020.

MandyCan noted over on Twitter that “Crash comes directly after the first challenger pack,” but sadly didn't go into much more detail than that: no release times or launch windows were teased.

In fact, the announcement of the information was pretty blunt – shortly after the above comment, the dataminer said that they won’t comment on any more leaks until Crash is announced by Nintendo.

There's no way of knowing how legitimate this rumour is – just because a leaker has been right once or twice before, that doesn't mean lightning will strike twice.

Crash Bandicoot has been a top request from fans, and chatter about the orange marsupial making his way into the game picked up when the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy landed on the Nintendo console on June 29, 2018.

Nintendo has not announced anything about Crash Bandicoot's arrival in Smash yet, so take all this with a healthy handful of salt, and treat it very much as a rumour.

Whoever we end up getting to play as in the next set of DLC that arrives in the game, we know that we'll have our hands on all six characters by Dec 31st 2021.

That may seem like a long way away right now, but we imagine that time will fly by pretty quick.
