Dungeons & Dragons: Something’s Apparently Brewing In Baldur’s Gate III
The time to gather your party and venture forth may soon be upon us, as Larian Studios has announced that Baldur’s Gate III news is due in February.
Baldur’s Gate III is the long-awaited sequel to one of the greatest RPG series of all time. Baldur’s Gate III is being developed by Larian Studios – the company behind the Divinity: Original Sin series – and it’s connection to the story of the Bhaalspawn saga from Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II is currently unknown. The only thing we know so far is that mind flayers are attacking the city of Baldur’s Gate.

Until recently, Larian Studios has kept quiet about the progress of Baldur’s Gate III and there has been no word regarding a release date. That might soon be changing, however, as the official Baldur’s Gate III Twitter page has uploaded a production video for the game featuring actors recording lines and performing action scenes in motion-capture suits. The video ends with the statement that something is brewing and that more will be revealed on February 27.
The last entry in the Baldur’s Gate saga was the Throne of Bhaal expansion for the second game, which was released back in June ’01. It’s possible that Baldur’s Gate III will be released on the twentieth anniversary of Throne of Bhaal‘s release.
There are still many unanswered questions regarding Baldur’s Gate III. Why have illithids attacked the city with a Spelljammer ship? Are any of the party members from the original game still around after all of this time? Will Bhaal be involved in the story at all, or is the game going in a totally different direction and is only using the same locations and characters from the early entries in the series?
A lot has changed in the Forgotten Realms since the days of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, and the actions of the player in Baldur’s Gate II turned out to be meaningless as Bhaal returned to godhood in the canon of Dungeons & Dragons. Maybe Baldur’s Gate III will give players the chance to finish what they started back in Athkatla and murder the god of murder once and for all.
The Baldur’s Gate III announcement will take place on February 27, 2020.
