Epic Games will pay for Shenmue III and other Kickstarter exclusive refunds
In an attempt to counter fan anger, Epic Games has said they’ll pay for refunds for people upset that Shenmue III is an exclusive.
As you may have noticed, a lot of people are very angry about Epic Games Store and they seem to have been that way for a while now.
The basic complaint is that Epic are buying up exclusives from Steam and forcing people to use their service if they want to play many of the PC’s top games.
This has caused particular problems when it involves crowdfunded games, where people assumed the finished product was going to be available on Steam and backed the project with that in mind.
Many fans have ended up cancelling their orders as a result and so to try and defuse the situation Epic Games has offered to pay for the refunds – so the developers aren’t left out of pocket.
Shenmue III will be the first game to benefit, after fans got angry at finding out that it’ll be an Epic Game Store exclusive for 12 months after its release (currently 19 November, if it’s not delayed again).
For other games, presumably including the likes of The Outer Worlds, the company has promised to ‘coordinate with colleagues at the other stores to ensure key availability in advance’.
And if that doesn’t work it’ll just issue refunds in the same manner. That’ll cost Epic money but whether it’ll win over disgruntled PC gamers remains to be seen.
