Fans Call For An "Established Assassin" To Be The Next Assassin’s Creed Protagonist
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla marks the twelfth installment of Ubisoft’s signature franchise. Valhalla and its immediate predecessors have been generously praised, however, some long-standing fans want the series to return to its roots. The call for an “established assassin” to fill the shoes of the franchise’s next protagonist has surfaced online, and there are some valid points being made.
The debate was initiated by Hbimajorv on Reddit, who gathered hundreds of users to discuss their hopes for Assassin’s Creed’s future. The series’ subreddit was alight with raw opinions on the franchise’s progression, but Hbimajorv’s eye was on who the next protagonist should be. “I want an established Assassin as the next protagonist,” the headline read, highlighting how the franchise has strayed from its core narrative. The Redditor mentioned they liked the newer titles, but their knowledge of the Hidden Ones was not relevant anymore.
The response to the user’s suggestion was quite substantial, as it became apparent that most were on the same page. “It’s nice to see I’m not alone in wanting to get back to being an assassin,” Hbimajorv commented, who wanted to see the franchise’s narrative revert back to that of the first game. Interest towards the new protagonist being a direct part of the Order was on the table, as well as better use of the Animus in modern titles. One Redditor said that the fan-favorite suggestion that a future game should be set in Japan would be the perfect setting to lean into the assassin role.
Altair was Assassin’s Creed’s first protagonist, who established the Brotherhood of Assassins within the series’ lore. Altair was a Master Assassin by the time he was 24 – raised to be one since birth – and liberated his kingdom after his mishap allowed the Templars to invade. Altair took the Order into secrecy going forward, and established many Assassin’s Guilds to fulfill his vision of spreading the Order throughout the world. This rich narrative is the kind that fans are missing from current titles, that have largely neglected the franchise’s foundation to focus more on historical settings.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is Ubisoft’s plunge into Norse mythology, which we think does a great job in honoring the long-standing series in our review. Ubisoft’s recent additions to the franchise are exciting, immersive, and very long, but a few more nods to its history or a new direction for the Order would not go amiss with fans.
