Granblue Fantasy ReLink Coming To PS4 and PS5 In 2022

It’s been four years since publisher and developer Cygames announced that they were working on Granblue Fantasy: Relink. The project has been largely silent lately, but a new video from their event, Granblue Fantasy Fes 2020, promised a new release window of 2022 on PS4 and PS5.

Cygames has a long and a bit of a bump history behind it on the journey to bring Relink to the public. Their livestream detailed some of that history, clearly outlining the timeline of what transpired and when. We know that a while back, Cygames also ended its partnership with PlatinumGames, the studio behind action titles like Bayonetta and Astral Chain. The announcement left a lot of fans confused, but Cygames and Platinum seemed to at least part ways amicably.

The development team hosted some honest and open conversations around the state of things, reassuring fans that no news doesn’t always mean something bad. Cygames outlined their current tasks on the project, like resolving issues they’ve pinpointed with the engine and ramping up their asset creation efforts. Cygames has uploaded all of their Granblue Fantasy Fes 2020 streams, but you can check out the Relink segment towards the end of the video around the 6:05:00 mark.

There are also 23 minutes of new gameplay footage included in the stream, demonstrating new areas and player abilities in the series’ signature art style. You get to see characters Djeeta, Katalina, Io, and Rosetta as they challenge enemies in a giant airship battle. Djeeta even briefly occupies one of the guns on the vessel, taking aim at nearby enemies to briefly show some of the many ways you can play.

Earlier this year, Arc System Works released their own Granblue title in the form of Granblue Fantasy Versus, a 2.5D fighting game that was announced back alongside Relink. Though Relink has been a bit troubled, Versus has seen success worldwide as it surpassed 450,000 units sold worldwide. For folks still looking for a little Relink news, Cygames Magazine will include an exclusive article about Relink’s graphics on December 14.
