GTA 6 fans keeping everything crossed for an imminent release date and reveal have been dealt some bad news. It looks like Grand Theft Auto fans could be waiting a few more years at least until the highly anticipated GTA 6 arrives. In-the-know journalist Jason Schreier was recently quizzed by a fan on Twitter about when the GTA 6 release date could be.
Schreier was asked whether he still thought GTA 6 could be coming out in 2023 as previously predicted.
Twitter user @odourvas asked the Bloomberg reporter: “Jason do you still expect GTA VI to be released around 2023? Like you said last year in the Triple Click podcast.”
And the former Kotaku news editor, who previously broke the news about other high-profile game delays such as The Last of Us Part 2, had some bad news.
Schreier replied: “Expect everything to be way later than you’d think because of Covid”.
This isn’t the first time that Schreier dropped a bombshell regarding GTA 6.
Around this time last year Schreier, in one of his final articles for Kotaku, gave an insight into cultural changes Rockstar Games was making following the release of Red Dead Redemption 2.
GTA Online: Rockstar Games tease The Cayo Perico Heist
And in that article the veteran gaming journalist slipped in some key information about the next GTA game.
Schreier said Rockstar’s next big project is a new Grand Theft Auto and that it could launch as a “moderately sized” game that will be updated and expanded over time.
But the key bit of information that Schreier was revealed was that the new Grand Theft Auto was in “early development”.
He wrote: “One plan that management has laid out for the next game, a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, is to start out with a moderately sized release (which, by Rockstar’s standards, would still be a large game) that is then expanded with regular updates over time, which may help mitigate stress and crunch.
“But there’s a catch: Rockstar’s next big project is still early in development.”
If GTA 6 does launch towards the end of 2023 or beyond then it would mean Grand Theft Auto fans have endured a gap of more than 10 years between the release of GTA 5 and the next mainline entry.
GTA 5 first released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013, before heading to PCs, PS4, Xbox One and now – later this year – Xbox Series X, S and PS5.
In the second half of this year and enhanced version of GTA 5 will release for next-gen consoles, which should help keep fans busy while they wait for GTA 6 – whenever that may launch.
When all is said and done, GTA 5 will have been released on three different console generations – which is staggering and unheard of.
Rockstar Games are also rumoured to be working on something else that could help fill the gap until GTA 6 finally comes out – remasters of the PS2-era Grand Theft Auto games.
So that’s GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas. GTA 3 celebrates its 20th anniversary later this year so if these latest rumours are true we may find more out before the big upcoming birthday.
GTA 3 arrived on the PS2 back in October 22 2001 and was exclusive to Sony’s record-breaking console, before heading to PCs the following year and the OG Xbox two years later.
