GTA: San Andreas VR coming to Oculus Quest 2 after ‘many years’ of development

Facebook has announced a VR version of GTA: San Andreas, which like Resident Evil 4 before it, will be exclusive to Oculus Quest 2.

Mark Zuckerberg himself has announced that there’s to be a new VR version of Rockstar Games’ 2004 classic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Unfortunately, neither he or the Oculus blog have offered any real details, only saying that it has been in development for ‘many years’.

The news follows the recent release of Resident Evil 4 as an Oculus Quest 2 exclusive, which turned out surprisingly well and is only a few months older than the original San Andreas.

‘Get a new perspective on Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas as you experience (again or for the first time) one of gaming’s most iconic open worlds. This is a project many years in the making, and we can’t wait to show you more of it’, is the only information on the Oculus blog.

Given how Resident Evil 4 was handled the initial assumption would be that the VR version of San Andreas will also use the original graphics, or something to close to them.

The upcoming release of GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition makes it much harder to imagine what’s going on though. Will the VR game also be based on the Definitive Edition remaster or will this be something entirely separate?

The talk of ‘many years’ of development does seem to imply that Oculus has been working on it themselves but with so little information to go on it’s impossible to say.

No release date was offered and there was no indication of which developer is handling the project, but if it’s already been in the works for a while it’s presumably relatively imminent.
