Harry Potter: Wizards Unite mobile game is out this Friday
The new game from the creators of Pokémon GO is out this week, but will it be as big as its critter-catching predecessor?
Niantic games has announced that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will launch in the UK and US on Friday, 21 June.
The idea of doing Pokémon GO but with a different franchise is not a new one, but since this is by the original creators the hope is that Harry Potter will prove just as popular as Pikachu and co.
Rather than encountering pokémon in the real world the idea behind Wizards Unite is that you’re looking for magical artefacts in order to keep the wizarding world secret from muggles (i.e. non-wizards).
These artefacts can be anything from simple props and objects to mythical monsters and evil wizards, or even parts of scenes from the books and movies.
The equivalent of Pokémon gyms are fortresses, where you have to team up with other players to take on tougher enemies.
In other words, it is very similar to Pokémon GO but there is some amount of depth, with a skill tree of abilities to unlock for your character and the ability to mix your own custom potions.
The coolest part of the app though is the AR ‘Portkeys’ which let you see magical realms through your phone, that aren’t there in real life, as if you really are walking into Harry Potter’s world.
Niantic have also teased a Pokémon GO Fest style event for later this summer, assuming the roll out this week goes to plan.
