God of War Ragnarok is one of 2022's big marquee games. The excitement has been building for the next chapter in Kratos' book, and so far the fan reception has been largely one of jubilance. And for good reason. If you loved 2018's God of War, this is a followup that does many of the same things, but on greatly increased scale.
While the 2018's God of War had The Lake of Nine, which acted as a wide-open hub, where you could engage in a multitude of different side activities, the other worlds were far more linear in comparison. The same cannot be said about Ragnarok, though. Now, multiple Lake of Nine-style areas exist throughout the different worlds. The scale of the side activities has increased substantially as well. Needless to say, there is a lot of game here. Which begs the question, 'how long does it take to beat?'
How Long Does The Story Take To Finish?
According to the statistics provided by HowLongToBeat, the average completion time for the story mode of God of War Ragnarok is just a minute shy of the 23-hour mark.
However, what these times don't tell us is what difficulty these players completed the game on. We would suspect that a player who completes the game on Give Me No Mercy will probably spend hours more on tough combat encounters than the Give Me Story players will. So, if you are playing the game on one of the easier modes, you can safely shave off an hour or two, while those playing on a harder more can almost certainly add a few on top of the average.
Those who completed the story while also completing a number of the side activities, averaged a completion time of 31 hours and 22 minutes, so around eight hours longer. This is probably more indicative of the type of playthrough the average gamer will engage in. Obviously, the same caveat about difficulty greatly effecting completion time will apply here too.
How Long Does It Take To Complete Everything?
Well, as we said in the introduction, this is a massive game. There is a deluge of side activities to engage in, and Ragnarok actively encourages players to get utterly lost in its worlds. It should be unsurprising, then, that the average completionist time of 45 hours and 52 minutes is nearly double the completion time for players who just follow the main path.
It is also worth noting that this number is only based off of the account of 22 players at the moment, who obviously aggressively pursued that 100% completion (as of the time of writing, the game hasn't even been out for a week). We wouldn't be surprised if the average time gradually drifts closer to what is currently listed as the "leisurely" completion playthrough estimation (54 hours and 58 minutes). Ultimately, we can assure you of one thing. If you plan to see everything there is to be seen in Ragnarok, you are going to be giving it days of your life. And we salute you for it!
