Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name Announced For 2023 Release
Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name has been announced for a 2023 release and will be a more traditional Yakuza game that shows what happened to Kiryu after Yakuza 6.
The trailer showed Kazuma Kiryu meditating in a temple during the Summer of 2018, where he's given an order from an unknown man. As Kiryu receives his new job, it's mentioned that he renounced the life he lived and even changed his name to Joryu, a name that wasn't mentioned in Like a Dragon. Kiryu then stands and prepares to go on his next mission.
The official description for The Man Who Erased His Name gives a little more detail on what to expect from the game. It says, "This classic high-octane RGG action-adventure sheds light on Kiryu’s perspective following the events of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life leading up to Like a Dragon 8."
Although it seems that The Man Who Erased His Name is more focused on the gap between Yakuza 6 and Like a Dragon, the description also mentions that it'll detail the leadup to Yakuza 8, which was announced within the same stream. Kiryu will also play a key role in the upcoming eighth game, where he has a completely different haircut and grey hair for the first time in the series. Yakuza 8 was also confirmed to be another turn-based game in the series, while The Man Who Erased His Name will be a more traditional Yakuza adventure.
Following the reveal trailer, the Ryu Ga Gotoku developers confirmed that The Man Who Erased His Name will be shorter than normal Yakuza games and will be around half the size. They also said that The Man Who Erased His Name should help players who aren't familiar with Kiryu in the leadup-to Yakuza 8, letting them get used to his personality. The final reveal from the stream was that Kiryu will have a brand-new fighting style in The Man Who Erased His Name.
