Monster Hunter Rise: Best Heavy Bowguns

Heavy Bowguns are one of the more complex weapons in Monster Hunter Rise. They utilize a variety of Ammo types with differing effects, and a number of different special abilities that affect how the weapon itself fires. It will take some time and training, but once you get the hang of how these weapons work, you can become one of the highest damage outputs in your hunting party.

All that is of course, on the assumption that you have access to the right equipment. When facing down giant beasts, it is critical to choose the right weapon for the battle. Don’t look at the raw damage output alone. Think about how elements can be used, or how the Bowgun’s existing skills can be paired with different armor sets.

This giant shotgun is crafted of Magnamalo parts. As one would expect of the monster this weapon is crafted from, the Sinister Dreadvolley is capable of dealing punishing amounts of damage. The above armor will already give the player the highest tier of Spread Up and Attack Boost, as well as high enough Reload Speed that supplementary skills can be added elsewhere.

Many players seek this Bowgun out for its Spread-type Ammo. The Sinister Dreadvolley is one of the strongest Spread-type Bowguns, so equipping the appropriate skills can make you a close-range nightmare. Make sure to use Talismans and Decorations to raise skills such as Dragonheart to add some extra durability, as this is an up-close and personal build.

The Tigrex Howl is another Heavy Bowgun that deals primarily physical damage. It is, of course, crafted from Tigrex material, so be prepared to face off with that monster multiple times. While the Tigrex Howl is coveted for its power, it has many benefits that set it apart from the Sinister Dreadvolley.

This Bowgun has Cluster Bomb and Sticky Ammo. This means that the weapon is capable of dealing high regular damage, but can also deal heavy explosive damage. This is valuable because monsters can be knocked down with the Sticky Ammo, and then brutalized by Cluster Bombs. It is also one of the few Bowguns that has the Wyverheart Special Ammo, which is what most players prefer on their Bowguns.

This Bowgun is derived from Rakna-Kadaki materials. Unlike most other weapons derived from this monster, this Heavy Bowgun does not specialize in inflicting status effects. Instead, its specialty is in its Piercing capacity.

The Araknamortar has access to three kinds of Piercing Ammo, as well as Slicing Ammo. These Ammos combined with Critical Boost, and Pierce Up skills can shred through any monster weak to Pierce damage. Another draw to this Bowgun is that it can be used as a support weapon if desired. The weapon also has access to Demon and Recover Ammo which can be used to buff allies.

Much in the same vein as the Tigrex Howl, Teostra’s Flames relies heavily on blast damage and Sticky Ammo. The niche this Bowgun fills is in knocking monsters down and keeping them there. The Ammo Up skill is important for this weapon so that the maximum number of explosives can be fired off at once.

When combined with the skills Attack Boost, Slugger, and Artillery, it is easy to knock a monster down about once every minute. This is not an exaggeration either. This Bowgun with the armor above gives a 50% bonus to explosive damage. Remember to use Decorations to max out Slugger, and use as many of the rest of the slots available to raise Attack Boost.

Nargacuga weapons always find their place on top-tier lists, and for good reason. This particular Bowgun starts at 30% Affinity. This translates to three out of every ten shots that land will result in a critical hit.

Critical hits are great for stripping a monster of its health. This already high critical hit ratio can be further increased with the correct skills applied. The ones you want to look out for are Critical Eye, Critical Boost, and Weakness Exploit. Maxing out these skills will put this weapon up to 100% critical chance.
