More Oddworld: Soulstorm Gameplay Showcased During PS5 Event
Oddworld: Soulstorm made an appearance during the PS5 price reveal event, showcasing a new cinematic and fresh gameplay.
Serving as an Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus successor, the newest game from Oddworld Inhabitants is using the PS5 to evolve the beloved series. Considering its largely original narrative, Soulstorm isn’t quite a remake of Exoddus, but it is certainly inspired by the original 1998 title. Abe and his zany world has been around since 1997, so loyal fans are beyond excited to see our protagonist through the lens of next-gen technology.
If the new trailer is any indication, there are about one-hundred-and-one new ways for Abe and his fellow Mudokons to die. Mullock is fuming mad after the events of RuptureFarms 1029, and now Abe finds himself smack in the middle of SoulStorm Brewery 401. The new platforming elements look more diverse and dangerous than ever before, and the studio appears to be laying into Oddworld’s darker, more unsettling themes. Behind the series’ bizarre gameplay and surrealist humor lies a deeper meaning; many fans theorize that the original games act as a warning against the horrors of the meat industry.
With new technological capabilities to shock us with, Oddworld Inhabitants is sure to capture the spirit of the cult classic. Lorne Lanning, the game’s creative director, gave a brief introduction during the PS5 pricing event. “The stakes are higher, the threats are larger, the obstacles are more devious – and it’s all made possible by the power of PlayStation 5.” The last franchise entry was Oddworld: New ‘N’ Tasty back in 2014, so Soulstorm should be a refreshing update when it finally drops.
