New PS5 slim console model will have detachable disk drive claims rumour
A new ‘slimmer and lighter’ version of the PS5 console is supposedly on its way but it’s not exactly the slim model many will be expecting.
So far there have been a number of new models of PlayStation 5 console, but they’ve all been minor updates that streamline the internal components and make the console only slightly lighter. However, a new rumour suggests that Sony is now planning its first major new hardware revision.
Although the new console is still expected to look similar to the existing models it will supposedly be smaller, largely because it has a detachable disk drive which is connected to the console via a USB-C cable.
The description of the console is a little vague, but it’s claimed it is ‘slimmer and lighter’ and will be sold either on its own or as a bundle with the disk drive. Disk drives will also be sold separately, if someone wants to get one later or if they become damaged.
According to the rumour, the disk drive will attach to the console ‘without looking external’, so it won’t just be hanging off the side by its cable.
It’s suggested that the new hardware will be released in the middle of Sony’s next financial year, which means somewhere around September 2023.
The rumour from Tom Henderson on Insider Gaming claims that the new model will use a completely new ‘D’ model chassis, which will replace the A, B, and C types currently in use. This is implied to include the standard and Digital Editions of the console going forward.
Sony apparently plans to manufacture a total of 18.5 units of the D chassis before March 2024 and only 12 million of the A to C chassis, suggesting not only a major ramp up in terms of manufacturing but also that they want to phase out the older chassis as quickly as possible.
