Overwatch in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate ‘would be awesome’ says Blizzard
If you think adding Tracer or Widowmaker to Smash Bros. would be cool then you’re not the only one, as a Blizzard producer weighs in.
Although Nintendo have said there’ll be more than just five DLC characters added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate it’s going to be a long time before we hear about them.
Slot number five though will hopefully be revealed this year, and after Overwatch was announced as coming to Nintendo Switch a character from Blizzard’s hugely popular shooter has increasingly seemed the most likely choice.
Of course, predicting Nintendo is a fool’s game but Blizzard producer Wes Yanagi certainly seemed to think it was a good idea, when recently asked by GameSpot.
‘As a player and big fan of [Smash], I think that would be awesome,’ said Yanagi. ‘It would be an honour if Nintendo chose to bring one of our characters into Smash Bros.’
Although Smash Bros. tends to prioritise Japanese-made characters, and hasn’t yet had a Western character that wasn’t originally published by Nintendo (e.g. Banjo and Kazooie), there’s no reason to suppose it couldn’t happen.
Speaking to IGN before he left, former Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime specially said that the DLC characters were to add characters not typically associated with Nintendo, which would certainly include Overwatch.
As to which Overwatch character it might be there’s no clue at all, but we certainly wouldn’t bet against it being Tracer.
Overwatch will be released on Nintendo Switch on 15 October, including all 31 heroes and 28 maps.
