Printing out New Pokémon Snap photos with the Instax Mini Link printer
New Pokémon Snap is out today and so too is an app that allows you to print out any screenshot from the Nintendo Switch.
After a wait of over two decades the sequel to Pokémon Snap is finally released this week but it’s not just the world of gaming that has changed a lot in that time, but also of photography and printing.
Back when the original game came out you could, if you were in America, go to a branch of Blockbusters and print out your photos from a special kiosk. But that’s something that’s obviously not going to happen today, and not just because Blockbusters doesn’t exist anymore.
There is an alternative though, as Nintendo has done a deal with Fujifilm for a special app that works with the Instax Mini Link printer, which is primarily designed for smartphones, and allows it to connect with the Switch.
Back in the day, Nintendo made their own printer, with the one for the original Game Boy designed to work alongside the Game Boy Camera and a few dozen games.
The Instax mini Link looks surprisingly similar to that old device, except it prints out high quality colour images that are about the size of a credit card.
There’s a specific app that works with the Nintendo Switch and although the Instax only advertises New Pokémon Snap, Animal Crossing, and Super Mario 3D World as working with it you can actually use any screenshot saved into the Switch’s album.
All you need to do is click the upload option, use the app to scan a QR code that’s generated on the TV, and the screenshot will magically appear on your phone.
From there you can simply print it out via the printer or there are some special Pokémon Snap themed frames you can add, as welling as editing tools to zoom or crop as you see fit.
If you want the full New Pokémon Snap experience then it’s a welcome set of options, although at around £110 for the printer you’re probably best to try and seek out someone that already has one, rather get it just for the Switch.
Or you could wait until the one with the special Pikachu-shaped case is released in the UK later this year.
Either way, we’re proud enough of our Animal Crossing village that we’re going to stick a few of these photos on the fridge…
