Sephiroth is new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighter – out this month
The new DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the bad guy from Final Fantasy 7 and he’s out a lot sooner than expected.
The first big announcement from The Game Awards was not a new game but the next DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and it was certainly a surprise pick.
Cloud Strife is already in the game, with means that Final Fantasy 7 already has a representative – which you would’ve thought was more than enough for a 23-year-old game that only came to a Nintendo format for the first time last year.
And while he is certainly one of gaming’s most famous bad guys, when it comes to Smash Bros. Sephiroth looks worrying like just another guy with a sword.
The Game Awards trailer didn’t give much away – there was no appearance from director Masahiro Sakurai – but it did seem to imply that Sephiroth’s various boss transformations would be part of the action, so maybe they’ll get around the guy with a sword problem that way.
Although there was no specific release date given the DLC will become available in December, which is a surprise as Sakurai has talked previously about how much the team has been slowed down by the pandemic.
Sephiroth will be the third of the six characters in the Fighters Pass Vol. 2, which means there’s only three left – with no plans for any more after that (and there wasn’t even supposed to be a Vol. 2 originally).
Given that nobody predicted (or asked for) Sephiroth it’s pretty impossible to guess who any of the other three are going to be, although you can be certain they now won’t be announced until next year.
The DLC was the only announcement from Nintendo at The Game Awards, so no Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 or Bayonetta 3. That means you’ll have to wait for a Nintendo Direct next year to learn about new Switch games for 2021 and beyond…
