Spelunky and Spelunky 2 headed to Nintendo Switch in 2021

Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are headed to Nintendo Switch. The announcement was made on Tuesday during the Nintendo Indie World Showcase.

Originally launched as a retail product in 2012, Spelunky began its life as a freeware game in 2008. Since then it’s developed a dedicated following, as well as critical acclaim from across the industry. Polygon named it among the most important games of the decade in 2019.

Spelunky 2 takes the originals formula and kicks it up a notch. In our review, Polygon editor-in-chief Chris Plante called it “perfection.”

You know when you finish a movie or book or game you love, and you wish you could experience it again for the first time? That’s what it has felt like to play Spelunky 2. I get to play my favorite game for the first time all over again.

This isn’t a sequel. It’s yet another chance to play Spelunky with fresh eyes; everything is just a little different, another stroke that proves perfection is imperfect. Even the best can get better.

Nintendo’s hybrid portable console seems like the perfect platform for the game, which is known for its punishing difficulty and surprisingly fun two-player mode. No pricing information was announced.
