Beautifully unconventional indie game Sea of Solitude coming this July from EA

Sea of Solitude wowed audiences at last year’s E3 with its expressive and unique art style. The presentation was all the more surprising given that the game is published by Electronic Arts, not a company particularly well known for picking up artsy, independent projects. Now the captivating exploration game from German studio Jo-Mei games has a release date. Sea of Solitude will launch on July 5 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC via Origin, and Xbox One for $19.99.

Sea of Solitude is the story of a young woman named Kay, lost in a flooded urban landscape and plagued by monsters. The environment itself is an elaborate metaphor for loneliness. Based on early impressions, Polygon placed Sea of Solitude on our list of the most-anticipated games of 2019.

“Players must help Kay see below the surface and beyond,” EA says in a press release, “guiding her through a flooded city landscape in a deeply touching tale of darkness and light. As waters rise and fall to reflect her own state of mind, Kay will meet fantastical creatures and monsters, learn their stories and solve challenges to rid the world of tainted memories.”

Jo-Mei’s CEO Cornelia Geppert has explained Sea of Solitude as a deeply personal project. Player’s journey through the game will be challenging, and include a series of environmental puzzles. Today’s press release indicates that rewards will include emotional payoffs that focus on “self-discovery and healing.”

Sea of Solitude is part of the EA Originals program, which the publisher says “helps shine a light on some of the most passionate, independent, and talented game studios across the globe.” Other titles include A Way Out, a co-operative two-player game about a prison escape, and Fe, a novel exploration-based platformer. Both titles were well received by critics.
