Cyberpunk 2077 team won’t say if more video games in that universe are in development
Following an article published by a Polish business news outlet, CD Projekt Red won’t confirm or deny that it’s making additional games set in the Cyberpunk universe beyond Cyberpunk 2077.
On July 1, financial and business website Bankier.pl reported in Polish on statements from CD Projekt president Adam Kiciński. Online translations of the article seemed to indicate that there were three projects in the works related to Cyberpunk 2077. Reached for comment, CD Projekt Red — a subsidiary of CD Projekt — said that’s simply not the case.
“We currently have a total of five teams working on a number of projects,” a representative told Polygon via email, “with three focusing on the development of Cyberpunk 2077. These include CD Projekt Red Warsaw and Kraków, who are handling the main game, as well as the Wrocław studio, where around 40 industry specialists are engaged in technology [research and development]. A separate, dedicated team at the Warsaw studio is handling the development of Gwent. The final team is Spokko, which is currently working on a yet unannounced mobile project.”
Polygon pressed for clarification, however: Could CD Projekt have another game set in that universe on the drawing board somewhere?
“We do not have more comments on the topic,” a representative said.
Polygon also reached out to R. Talsorian Games. Cyberpunk 2077 is being produced under license from R. Talsorian Games, publishers of the original Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop RPG. Would the license agreement between it and CD Projekt even allow for multiple titles? “Any questions about projects CD Projekt Red is engaged in should go to CD Projekt Red,” said a representative.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be out on April 16, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One. The prequel, a tabletop RPG by R. Talsorian Games called Cyberpunk Red, will get a starter set this August. Expect it to be the first formal look into the lore behind the highly-anticipated video game from the makers of The Witcher.
